With a magnificent presence, Konjiki-do of the Chuson-ji Temple, mesmerizes all who gaze upon its golden glow. It was built about 900 years ago, in 1124, to wish the peaceful death of Fujiwara-no Kiyohira.
The Konjiki-do represents the 100 year long prosperity of the Fujiwara family over Oshu. In this golden mausoleum lie the spirits of Fujiwara-no Kiyohira, Motohira, Hidehira, and Yasuhira.

Embracing the Konjiki-do, Chuson-ji Temple was established by Jikaku Daishi Ennin. It is the home of the Oshu Fujiwara where Kiyohira built many Buddhist monuments.
Even today there are over 3000 national treasures within the Chuson-ji Temple.

This is the Chuson-ji Temple Chinju Hakusan Shrine Noh Stage, which was completed in 1853 by the Sendai leading Date Family.

The Ganjoju Temple Pagoda. The stone pagoda is said to be the prototype of the 5-storied pagoda.
This is the Shakuson Temple Five-storied Pagoda.
The engraving depicting the 4th year of the Ninan period suggests that it the oldest known stone pagoda in Japan.

The haiku poet Matsuo Basho came to Hiraizumi about 300 years ago.

As reminders of Fujiwara prosperity, only the Chuson-ji Temple and Motsu-ji Temple remain.
They are said to have portrayed the styles of the Pure Land Buddhist Jodo Garden and Jodo Paradise of the late Heian Period.
Brilliantly decorated boats figure-headed with dragons and phoenixes sailed around the Oizumi Pond, providing entertainment to the artisans.
The Gokusui-no En, a poem festival, is held on the fourth Sunday of May every year.
A festival that seems to transcend 900 years of time.
Elegant poetry reading of the Heian Period is revived.

Construction of the Motsu-ji Temple is said to have been started by 2nd generation Motohira Fujiwara and continued by 3rd generation Hidehira.

Basho stood on these grounds contemplating the 100 years of the Oshu Fujiwara's prosperity.

Located East of the Motsu-ji Temple is the site of the Kanjizai Oin.
It is said that the Kanjizai Oin was built by the wife of 2nd generation Fujiwara-no Motohira.
Muryoko-in Temple once stood here. It is where the Fujiwara family prayed for peace.
The temple is said to surpass Kyoto’s Byodo-in Temple with its mastery of art.
Takokuno Iwaya Bishamon-do Hall.
This hall was built by Sakano-ueno Tamuramaro in the 20th year of the Enryaku Period, 801 AD.
It is said that the war victor Minamoto Yoritomo, the Genji family prayed at the Magaibutsu, a Buddha statue inscribed on a stone boulder.

The Oshu Fujiwara Family brought their own capital to Hiraizumi, creating a Golden Country with their extreme wealth.
It is said that Hiraizumi at that time prospered as a cultural city in line with Kyoto and Kamakura.
However, harboring Minamoto Yoshitsune who had fled to Oshu, lead to the end of the Fujiwara clan.
28 thousand soldiers led by Minamoto Yoritomo invaded Hiraizumi and the golden empire fell.
Hiraizumi; where Buddhist temples and Jodo Pure Land Gardens are a reminder of the past.
Becoming one with a rich natural environment, this "cultural scenery" has been gaining worldwide acceptance as a valuable cultural asset.
